Dimensional Letters & Logos — Long Island, NY
Custom-fabricated dimensional letters in aluminum, acrylic, stainless, and HDU foam for commercial buildings across Nassau and Suffolk County. Illuminated and non-illuminated options.
What Are Dimensional Letters?
Dimensional letters are three-dimensional fabricated letters and logos — typically aluminum, acrylic, stainless steel, brass, or HDU foam — installed as the primary identification element on a building, lobby wall, or sign. Unlike flat printed graphics, dimensional letters cast their own shadows, catch light, and project authority. They're the standard for premium commercial identity: corporate headquarters, banks, law firms, medical centers, hotels, and high-end retail.
Where dimensional letters live in our service catalog: when illuminated and installed on a building exterior as the primary storefront identification, we typically call them "channel letters" and they live on our Storefront Signs page. When non-illuminated and used in a building lobby, we typically call them "reception signs" and they're part of an Interior Signs program. This page is about dimensional letters as a fabrication discipline — the materials, finishes, and mounting options available — across every application.
Dimensional Letter Materials: Choosing the Right One
Fabricated Aluminum
The premium standard for exterior applications. Custom-formed, painted or anodized, available in any size and finish. Holds up to Long Island weather indefinitely. Ideal for corporate buildings, banks, hotels, and high-traffic retail.
Cast or Routed Acrylic
Glass-clear or any solid color, ideal for interior reception applications and as the face material on illuminated channel letters. Lighter and less expensive than aluminum, with sharp edge definition.
Stainless Steel & Brushed Metal
Premium architectural metal — stainless steel, brushed aluminum, brass, bronze, copper. Used for prestige applications: law firms, financial services, luxury retail, corporate headquarters. Material cost is higher; the visual impact justifies it.
HDU Foam (High-Density Urethane)
Carved or CNC-routed foam letters with sandblasted, stained, or painted finishes. The right choice for traditional, hand-crafted, or 'small-town main street' aesthetics. Common for restaurants, B&Bs, country clubs, and historic district applications.
Plastic / PVC / Composite
Lower-cost option for non-prestige interior applications. Good for back-of-house wayfinding, employee-only areas, and short-term applications. Not recommended for primary brand identity.
Mounting Options for Dimensional Letters
Stud Mounted (Pin Mounted)
Threaded studs on the back of each letter mount into holes drilled into the wall surface. Letters can be flush to the wall or held off the wall on spacers (creating a shadow line). Most common for premium installations.
Flush Mounted
Letters glued or VHB-tape mounted directly to the wall surface with no spacing. Cleaner profile, lower visual depth. Used for interior applications where projection isn't needed.
Halo-Lit (Reverse Channel)
LED illumination behind each letter creates a glowing halo on the wall behind it. Letters appear silhouetted against light. Premium look for lobbies, building exteriors, and modern retail.

Frequently Asked Questions: Dimensional Letters on Long Island
What materials are dimensional letters made from?
We fabricate in aluminum, acrylic, HDU foam, stainless steel, bronze, and brass. Each material has specific applications for interior vs. exterior and illuminated vs. non-illuminated use.
How do dimensional letters attach to a building?
The most common methods are stud mounting (threaded studs in pre-drilled holes — premium look with adjustable depth), VHB tape and adhesive (for interior smooth surfaces), and raceway mounting (a horizontal bar holds multiple letters and electrical components — common for storefront illuminated letters). We specify the mounting method based on your wall material (drywall, masonry, EIFS stucco, glass, metal panel), letter weight, and whether the letters are illuminated. Each method has structural and code implications we account for during design.
Do dimensional letters need permits on Long Island?
Exterior illuminated dimensional letters require sign permits in Nassau and Suffolk County. Non-illuminated letters may or may not require permits depending on the municipality. We determine and handle this for you.
How long does fabrication take?
Dimensional letter fabrication typically takes 3–6 weeks depending on size, material, and illumination. Permit processing may extend this timeline for exterior installations.
How much do dimensional letters cost?
Pricing varies dramatically by material, size, and finish. As rough guides: acrylic letter sets for interior reception start around $400–$1,200. Fabricated aluminum letter sets for exterior building identification typically run $2,500–$15,000+ depending on letter size and quantity. Stainless steel and premium architectural metal letters run 50–100% more than aluminum. Halo-lit and illuminated dimensional letters run 2–3x the cost of non-illuminated equivalents. Quotes are firm after final design and material selection.
How long do dimensional letters last?
Properly fabricated aluminum, stainless steel, and brass letters last essentially indefinitely on Long Island — 30+ years is realistic. Acrylic letters last 15–25 years before yellowing or fading becomes noticeable. HDU foam letters last 10–20 years exterior, longer indoors. We service all of them — repaint, refurbish, or refasten — when needed.
